This is an old tale from a long, long time ago. A nostalgic tale that only GOD knows.

Arc 1. Ever Since I Was Born

“—Hey, what is your wish?”

What is it, I wonder?
There’s a girl standing before me.
Smiling. And laughing.
What’s wrong with her?

“You still don’t know?”

About what?

“You won’t ask Maki-chan1 for anything? You’re 15 years old already, so there must be something, right? You must have a lot of wishes, right?”

Maki-chan2?
—Oh I see, it’s the usual dream.
A dream where 【Maki-chan】 shows up, one that I’ve seen over and over again.
With this, it’ll have already been seven times.

“Like I said, this is not a dream. How many times do you want me to keep saying it? Maki-chan has always been waiting for you, but why won’t you make a wish? I’m getting tired of waiting.”

I don’t really understand, but she seems to be angry.

“Oh, Maki-chan is not a kid, so I won’t get angry, okay? To be honest, I won’t get tired either, it’s not—…”

Maki-chan stopped mid-sentence, and lowered her head.

“…It’s not like I’m feeling lonely at all…”

Just what is she trying to say?
Maki-chan lifted her head.

“Hey, do you really not have anything you want? Nothing?”

In actuality, it’s Maki-chan herself that seems to want something.
Maki-chan has a 【wish】. As for the reason, I don’t know.

“I’ll grant you any wish. That’s why—— Please make a wish?”

Boxes appeared on Maki-chan’s hand.
Numerous colourful boxes.

“Do you want to redo your past? Do you want to see the future so you won’t make a mistake? Do you wish to be allowed to live peacefully? Do you wish to exact your revenge? Do you want to be the strongest hero? Or do you want to be able to use magic to make you immortal? …I can grant you any wishes. No matter what the wish. Or perhaps—”

She laughed as soon as she said that.

“Or perhaps, you wish to be happy?”

……

“——? Why are you shaking your head? Do you really have nothing you wish for?”

…There’s no such thing.
None.

“Why? Don’t you want to be happy?”

Maki-chan asked, seeming to be a bit worried.
But I myself don’t even know what happiness is.
That’s why I don’t have anything I want.
Nothing.

“So Maki-chan is useless, then? I can’t even grant a wish? Even though the only reason Maki-chan can grant wishes is because XX of XXX—…”

I can’t catch the words she’s saying.

“………”

Maki-chan bit her lip.

“…Maki-chan won’t give up. Maki-chan will wait. Don’t forget, always remember. Maki-chan is waiting in that old house. Always waiting in that lonesome twilight. That’s why you must come and see me.”

I will definitely grant you your wish.

1 She’s addressing herself as Maki-chan from the third-person perspective.

2 -chan suffix is the most familiar honorific and is supposedly derived from children who couldn’t say “San” properly. This small mistake was considered cute and stayed in the language. It is used to refer to young women you’re close with, children, babies, a grandmother, or even an animal you’re especially fond of. It can also be used in a couple or when talking about someone you like a lot. You therefore need to be careful who you use it with and avoid using it for people you’re not so close to. [gogonihon] . But in this occasion, our protagonist address her that way because that’s how she address herself, and he basically like a small kid not understanding the way of the world.
